Packing List - 8 Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu Tour
This 8-day expedition covers high-altitude streets in Cusco, humid cloud forests, and a 5,150 m summit. Expect a 30°C (86°F) temperature range and varied terrain, so pack strategically.
Essential Documents & Cash
Original Physical Passport: Required for the KM 82 checkpoint, train boarding, and Machu Picchu entry. Only the physical passport used to book your permits is accepted.
Cash (Soles): Bring 400–500 soles for the tipping ceremony on Day 5, local snacks, mountain restrooms, and personal purchases in Pisac or Aguas Calientes.
The Layering System (Clothes)
Base & Mid-Layers: Pack 3–4 moisture-wicking t-shirts (synthetic or merino wool) and one mid-weight fleece. Avoid cotton, as it retains moisture and cold.
Outer Shell: A waterproof rain jacket is essential for the cloud forest. A heavy-duty down jacket is required for sub-zero temperatures at the Rainbow Mountain summit.
Bottoms: Bring two pairs of durable trekking pants (zip-offs are ideal for the jungle) and one pair of thermal leggings for cold mornings on Day 4 and Day 7.
Accessories: Pack a fleece-lined beanie and waterproof gloves for high passes, and a wide-brimmed sun hat for exposed trail sections.
Footwear & Extremities
Boots: Choose waterproof, ankle-supporting boots that are thoroughly broken-in. The trail is uneven and slippery, and the summit requires maximum traction.
Socks: Bring 4–5 pairs of high-quality wool hiking socks. Merino wool is recommended to help prevent blisters.
Camp/Hotel Shoes: Pack lightweight sneakers or sandals for use at campsites and hotels to rest your feet.
Gear & Tech
Daypack (25–30L): Should include a waterproof rain cover. Use it to carry water, camera, sunblock, and extra layers.
Duffel Bag (7 kg): Provided at your briefing and carried by porters on Days 3 to 6. Pack your sleeping bag and evening clothes in this bag.
Trekking Poles: Strongly recommended for all 8 days. They help protect your knees on the 3,000-step descent to Wiñay Wayna and provide stability on steep inclines.
Hydration: Carry 2 to 3 liters of water. Staying hydrated is essential to prevent altitude sickness at the 5,150 m peak.
Power Bank: Bring one with at least 10,000 mAh capacity. Cold temperatures at campsites and summits drain batteries quickly, so keep devices charged for key moments.
Toiletries & Health
Sun & Bug Protection: Use SPF 50+ sunscreen due to intense high-altitude UV, and bring high-DEET insect repellent for biting flies at Machu Picchu and in the cloud forest.
Personal Med Kit: Include altitude medication (Diamox), ibuprofen for headaches, and a comprehensive blister kit (Compeed or Moleskin).
Hygiene Essentials: Bring hand sanitizer, biodegradable wet wipes, and a small roll of toilet paper, as restrooms on the trail and at the trailhead often lack supplies.
Recovery Fuel: Pack electrolyte tablets and high-energy snacks, such as protein bars or nuts, for the final ascent to Dead Woman’s Pass and Rainbow Mountain.

FAQs About the 8-Day Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
How difficult is the trek to Rainbow Mountain on Day 7?
After finishing the Inca Trail, you should be well acclimated, but the altitude of 5,150 m (16,896 ft) is still a real challenge. The hike is a steady two-hour climb. If you need help, local community members offer horse rentals at the trailhead for about 80 to 100 soles.
What happens to my main luggage during the Inca Trail?
Your main luggage will be safely stored at your hotel in Cusco or Ollantaytambo. For the four-day trek (Days 3 to 6), you only need to carry a small daypack. We give you a 7 kg (15 lb) duffel bag for your clothes, toiletries, and sleeping bag, and our porters will carry it for you.
Is the water safe to drink during the trek?
Yes, we provide boiled, filtered, and cooled water from lunch on Day 3 and for the rest of the trek. Please bring a reusable water bottle or hydration pack (2 to 3 liters). On Days 1 and 2, you can buy bottled water in Cusco or the Sacred Valley.
What are the toilet and shower facilities like on the trail?
We set up private, portable toilet tents for our group at every campsite and lunch stop. There are also public restrooms at some points along the trail, but they may charge a small fee (1 to 2 soles) and often do not have basic supplies. Showers are not available for the first two nights, but we provide warm water for washing each morning and evening.
Do I need to bring my own sleeping bag and mat?
Sleeping bags are not included in the base price, but you can rent one at your pre-trek briefing. We provide standard foam sleeping mats for everyone. If you want extra comfort, you can upgrade to an inflatable mattress (Therm-a-Rest style).
How much should I tip the porters, chefs, and guides?
Tipping is a common and appreciated practice on treks. On the evening of Day 5, the group usually pools tips for the porters and chefs. We suggest about 80 to 100 soles per porter from the group. You can tip your guide individually at the end of the tour in Cusco.
What if I experience altitude sickness?
Your safety comes first. All our guides are certified in Wilderness First Aid and always carry oxygen and a full medical kit. Our acclimatization plan in Cusco and the Sacred Valley helps lower the risk of altitude sickness. We also suggest talking to your doctor about altitude medication like Diamox before your trip.
Is there electricity or Wi-Fi on the trail?
There is no electricity or Wi-Fi on the Inca Trail between Kilometer 82 and Machu Picchu. We recommend bringing a portable power bank (10,000 mAh or more). You might get a limited signal when you reach the Sun Gate on Day 6.
Can I bring my own snacks?
Yes, you can. We provide full meals and daily snacks, but many hikers like to bring their own energy bars, electrolytes, or favorite snacks for extra energy, especially on tough sections like Dead Woman’s Pass.
Are there age limits or fitness requirements?
There is no official age limit, but you should be in good physical shape. We have guided travelers as young as 10 and as old as 70 and above. The main requirement is being able to hike 7 to 8 hours a day on uneven and steep trails.
